Brits can set off for their Christmas holidays safe in the knowledge that the distance they travel has little bearing on the likelihood of having to claim on their
travel insurance.
In order to visit friends and family during the festive season, Britons will collectively cover three billion miles, according to hotel chain Travelodge.
Londoners were found to be the most likely to jet off this December while those living in Leicester generally opt for celebrations close to home.
However, the UK's largest direct travel insurer reports that choosing to stay in Europe does not necessarily reduce the need to lodge a claim.
Spain topped an Insure and Go poll for both medical and baggage claims, whereas Australia and New Zealand, despite being 9,000 miles away came in low down on the list of claims per country.
Some 24 per cent of medical claims put forward by Insure and Go's customers were from visitors to Spain, compared with just four per cent travelling to Australasia.
But the research reveals that the tendency to claim is not linked to proximity to the UK. Despite being the world's top tourist destination, only two per cent of claims on medical insurance were lodged by Brits in France.
