Britons who are attempting to save money during the recession by carrying out tricky DIY work on gas or electrical appliances rather than securing the services of a professional have been warned to think twice.

New research by the Gas Safe Register revealed that although 82 per cent of the people questioned knew it was dangerous to attempt to fit a gas fire themselves, one in ten were prepared to do so.

And while 15 per cent of people admitted they would contact a qualified tradesperson, over 40 per cent of Britons would attempt to fit a new gas appliance unaided.

However, the group warns that such DIY enthusiasts are putting their own lives and those of other household members at risk.

"Incorrectly fitted, badly repaired or poorly maintained gas appliances are a major cause of carbon monoxide poisoning. They can also lead to gas leaks and explosions," the group stated.

It could also be said that homeowners who carry out such work themselves may be going against the clauses of their home insurance contracts.

Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer as its symptoms are often confused with those of other, less deadly, illnesses.
