Road users travelling abroad should take all their relevant documents with them, but must not leave them in their vehicles,
car insurance provider esure stated in recent days.
The firm said that drivers who leave items such as their driving licence, emergency contact information and insurance policy details in their automobile they may be at risk of identity fraud if the car is stolen.
Adrian Webb, head of corporate communications at the firm, stated: "It's perfectly possible that if a thief steals your car they can also steal your identity with the driving license, insurance documents, those kind of things."
He suggested that important papers should be kept in a safe place, such as a hotel or other accommodation rather than being left in a car glovebox.
Figures from the RAC Foundation indicate that some three million British motorists travel to Europe by ferry and channel tunnel on an annual basis.
