An increasing number of Britons are choosing to travel by ferry following the recent fire in the Channel Tunnel, the port has commented.
Keith Southey, public relations and marketing manager at the Port of Dover, explained that the blaze highlighted the need for an alternative method of crossing the channel.
However, he noted that while there was a substantial increase in trade and tourism at the port while the tunnel was closed, ferry travel has always been popular with large numbers of British tourists.
As the winter season draws near, Mr Southley advised: "Obtain a booking from a ferry company before setting out for the Port of Dover because at peak times there will be some capacity issues on the ferries."
Statistics released by the port showed that in the week preceding the fire, 284,780 passengers crossed the channel by ferry. In the full week after the fire, that figure rose to 355,000.
