The Association of British Drivers (ABD) has criticised recent proposals to lower the drink driving limit to 50mg as being contradictory and self-defeating.

ABD pointed to its own consultation with the Government almost ten years ago where it had said that there was measurable increase in accident risk between the 50mg and 80mg limits.

If the 80mg limit had been chosen, the association added, it was because it is at this point that the risk of a driving incident increases.

GEM (formerly the Guild of Experienced Motorists) last week for a further reduction of the drink drive limit, which the Government had reportedly been open to.

'By calling for more police and a lower limit, GEM is shooting road safety in the foot. What's the point of more police patrols tasked to deal with dangerous drunk drivers then distracting them from this duty by creating millions more 'offences' through criminalising those whose BAC isn't dangerous?" argued Nigel Humphries, spokesman for ABD.

Mr Humphries further added that the lack of a reasonable debate on the issue was leading to the criminalising of reasonable behaviour.

He said thatit was the extreme behaviour of drunk drivers well over the limit that police had to focus their resources on.
