Motorists have been warned that receiving a drink driving conviction will have a substantial upward influence on their car insurance premium.

In a recent statement, Erik Nelson, a spokesperson for Norwich Union, reminded people that in addition to this, individuals failing to list any previous convictions when applying for a new policy are at risk of their cover becoming void in the event of a claim.

He insisted that honesty is always the best policy when it comes to making insurance applications.

"If you want a drink, consider taking a taxi or public transport, or having a designated driver if you are out with friends. Ultimately, it is the individual's responsibility," Mr Nelson advised.

According to research carried out by the Motor Insurer's Bureau in September of last year, uninsured drivers are ten times more likely to have a drink driving conviction than motorists with cover.

They were also said to be six times more likely to drive an unsafe vehicle.
