Consumers should take extra care when driving in wintry conditions to ensure they do not risk having to make car insurance claims, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba).

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at Biba, explains that motorists should prepare for colder conditions by making sure that their tyre treads are the correct legal depth and using anti-freeze.

He also advises drivers to take a "survival kit" including items such as a mobile phone, insurance details and breakdown documentation on road trips.

Mr Trudgill notes that on particularly long journeys, in poor conditions, it is wise for road users to tell the person at the other end their expected time of arrival, should any mishaps occur.

According to data from the AA, December 21st is expected to be the busiest day to travel over the Christmas and new year period.
