Car owners are advised to keep a copy of their car insurance policies with them when they drive, according to website insurancewide.com.

Drivers who travel without their car insurance can risk a fine or confiscation if they are stopped by the police.

"If an insurer is late in reporting a new policy owner's details to the Motor Insurance Database then the unsuspecting driver could mistakenly be deemed uninsured and then fined if stopped by police," said James Harrison, chief executive of the site.

Insurers have to submit a driver's insurance details to the Motor Insurance Database within ten days of purchase.

The Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) also requires motorists to notify it of about 95 per cent of all car insurance changes within two weeks, soon to be whittled down to just one.

Mr Harrison added that he wished more insurers would offer customers the option of having an electronic copy of their policies.

Insurers achieve 97.5 per cent within 14 days and 80 per cent within 48 hours, resulting in 100,000 vehicles having been taken off the road, the MIB also said.
