In a recent study examining people's understanding of various driving speed limits, it was revealed that only one per cent of respondents answered all questions correctly.

Moreover, one in three people were found to be unsure of the national speed limit, while a further 34 per cent of people were found to have scored less than 50 per cent on the uSwitch test.

The price comparison service also reports that nearly one in ten people (eight per cent) answered every question incorrectly.

According to statistics by the Department for Transport, driving too fast caused over 16,000 accidents in the UK during 2006.

Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, commented: "It's worrying that many of the accidents can be directly linked to gaps in driver knowledge. It seems that some motorists forget the rules of the road as quickly as they tear up their L-plates.""

Earlier this month, uSwitch announced its full support for Home Office plans to introduce tougher driving tests.
