A new study by Swiftcover.com has suggested that many UK motorists are unsure the extent to which their car insurance provider will protect them in the event of an accident.

One example cited by the group was a lack of awareness among motorists that they could be held to be negligent if involved in an accident while eating or smoking, even though it is not a criminal offence.

Driving other people's vehicles was also highlighted as a grey area in terms of awareness, with 29 per cent of respondents saying that they thought that they would be covered.

However, the group suggests that the majority of policies would not cover such a course of action.

"Don't just assume you'll be covered - if you need to drive someone else's car, check your insurance policy," the company urges.

The group also encourages drivers to make sure that mileage estimations are accurate and to be aware that reactions can be significantly lower when eating or smoking while behind the wheel.

Online resource Safermotoring.com notes that these types of driving distractions are a major contributor to accidents on the roads.
