The tourism sector in Dubai has seen growth this year, according to new information from the country's department of tourism and commerce marketing (DTCM).

Figures from the organisation suggest that the number of arrivals reached 5.1 million in the nine-month period ending in September - a seven per cent increase on the corresponding timeframe in 2006.

City hotels reported a total of 15.3 million guest nights in the first nine months of the year, an increase of 18 per cent on the same period last year.

Director general of the DTCM Khalid Bin Sylayem told the Gulf News: "The excellent performance is a reflection of our marketing and promotional initiatives, especially in the overseas markets, to position Dubai as the world's leading tourism hub."

The DTCM aims to attract 1.4 million visitors from the UK and Ireland by 2010.
