It all got a bit too much for Abey the elephant in a match at Sri Lanka's sixth annual elephant polo tournament as he took his frustration out on the opposing team's minibus.

The eight-year-old was playing for the USA against Spain in the heat of Sri Lanka's south-eastern plains and lost his temper, throwing off his rider and stomping off the pitch before proceeding to repeatedly head-butt the Spanish team's bus.

After watching her team-mate be thrown from the back of the nearly three metre tall animal and get her foot stuck in a stirrup, American player Courtney Zenz said: "I'm not playing again. It's not safe."

Geoffrey Dobbs, the tournament's organiser explained: "I've been playing for seven years and it has never happened before. He got confused.

"Elephants are quite short-sighted and if there are sudden movements in front of them, they can sometimes be unpredictable."

Elephant polo originated 26 years ago in Sri Lanka when two avid British fans decided to use the animals in place of horses with extended bamboo sticks for mallets.

Sri Lanka's international tournament hosts eight teams from around the world and is played at the beautiful city of Galle, which is now a World Heritage Site owing to its stunning architecture stretching back to the 16th century.
