People living in the European Union could be unaware of a healthcare card which makes it easier for holiday makers to get medical care whilst in other member states it has been suggested.

Expatcia reports that the card, which is free and lasts for five years, guarantees the holder emergency healthcare in 31 European countries. This includes all EU member countries as well as Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. According to Expatcia 36 per cent of EU citizens have one of the cards.

The card is printed in the language of the issuing state but with a uniform design to make it easy to understand for medical professionals in all EU member countries.

Medical costs will be paid in full or part by the health insurance company of the cardholder. Those needing treatment in countries such as Belgium and France must themselves pay for the treatment and then they will reimbursed after returning back home.

Any treatment that would be covered by normal travel insurancewould not be covered by the card and users cannot go for medical treatment at private clinics.

According to NHS Direct the card covers maternity care, renal dialysis and managing the symptoms of pre-existing conditions which flare up while abroad.
