Tourists travelling to destinations within the European Union should always remember to take a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with them, the AA has advised.

In the event of an accident, the EHIC allows UK tourists free or low-cost access to healthcare while they are on the continent.

The card replaced the previous E111 form in January 2006 and provides an easy way to ensure a level of health cover while travelling.

However, Ian Crowder, public relations manager for the AA, also said that the levels of health service may vary across different EU destinations.

Mr Crowder added that "travel insurance is always a good idea", as it provides assurance that people will be covered in the event of accident or injury.

According to Gapyear.com, around 25 per cent of young travellers either have inadequate travel insurance or none at all.

InsureandGo offers tailored travel insurance policies to suit all travel needs, with backpacker policies available for those taking a year out.
