Booking early is the best way to obtain cheap flights and travel packages, tourists have been advised.
According to Tom Hall, travel editor of the Lonely Planet, there are still a large number of competitive deals around, particularly for those who plan in advance.
However, further savings can be made by making considered choices on a number of other travel arrangements, he said.
"If you do book a cheap flight then you need to be a savvy traveller and that means a number of things: book early, be prepared to travel at anti-social times," he commented, adding that online check-ins and only travelling with hand luggage would also result in savings.
His comments followed media reports that airline costs are set to increase considerably in the coming months as more than 60 million seats are axed from mainstream flights.
This equates to one in every 14 of the world's airline seats being cut as operators look to consolidate their position in a difficult market.
