As many as one in ten people travelling over the Easter break will do so without insurance.

So claims Sainsbury's Bank, in research published today.

The company suggests that more than four million people did not have travel insurance last time they headed abroad, leaving themselves open to high costs should anything occur to them or their belongings while on the trip.

Neil Laird, travel insurance manager at Sainsbury's Finance, said: "It doesn't matter if it's an Easter break, a weekend away or your main summer holiday, if something happens whilst you're abroad, you need to know that you have adequate cover in place to take care of things."

He added that insurance was as important a factor to consider as taking a passport when heading for foreign climes.

Londoners were identified as the worst group in terms of failing to take out insurance cover, while those in the East Midlands and Anglia were shown to be the most sensible with only 6.5 per cent travelling without cover last time the headed abroad.

Meanwhile, moneysupermarket.com has warned travellers to consider their payment options carefully before embarking this year given the high currency transfer fees levied by many credit card providers.

Those seeking out travel insurance might find that the variety of options supplied by InsureandGo are suited to their needs.
