Taking out holiday insurance and heading off on an eco-cruise could be a popular pastime in 2010, it has been claimed.

Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic, said the use of small, low-impact ships that are more environmentally-friendly will be a growing trend this year as the eco-cruise industry looks to get back on its feet following the economic downturn.

She commented: "Prior to economic meltdown, we saw a lot of growth though now that's slowed. I do think that with a healthy economy, this is a niche of cruising that will continue to expand."

According to Cruise Critic, the overall cruise market remained buoyant in 2009 despite the effects of the recession and the global economic downturn.

The company has predicted that bargain prices and a return to positive economic growth in the UK will result in a bumper year for the sector as people look to make up for the lack of an overseas holiday in the last 12 months.
