Collectively, UK motorists could save as much as £8 billion in petrol costs by adopting more economical driving practices, swiftcover.com has suggested.
According to the
car insurance provider, fuel is now the third largest demand on monthly expenditure, behind mortgage repayments and food costs.
To help reduce the burden, the group recommends removing roof racks and other heavy items to make vehicles run more smoothly.
Drivers should also check that tyres are properly inflated to avoid wasted energy. The group suggests that keeping tyres pumped could reduce fuel costs by ten per cent.
Smooth braking and accelerating are also recommended as this puts less strain on the engine, while speed is also said to be an important factor in reducing fuel expenditure.
The optimum speed to drive at is said to be between 55 and 65 miles per hour.
In an earlier report, the group also recommended avoiding rush hour travel whenever possible to reduce fuel costs.
