Those considering taking out car insurance on a new electric car might want to think again before finalising the purchase.

Hugh Bladon, spokesperson for the Association of British Drivers, said that he believes there are not a lot of advantages to electric vehicles, as the energy they consume still has to be generated in power stations, which themselves are significant producers of CO2.

Therefore, Mr Bladon noted that rather than focusing on new electric vehicles, efforts should be made to make existing vehicles as environmentally friendly as possible.

He commented: "You've got to generate the electricity, we'd have plugs all over the place, wires hanging around, and I don't think there is much future in them at all."

The government recently announced a new £25 million grant which could deliver hundreds of new electric cars to the UK over the next 18 months.

As part of the initiative, real life road tests are to be carried out, with the information gained from these trials playing an important part in the future viability of electric vehicles in this country.

Anyone considering purchasing a new vehicle - be it electric or otherwise - might want to take out car insurance with InsureandGo.
