Eco-friendly vehicles are already helping some drivers to save money on their car insurance, due to their lower emissions.

However, a move away from combustion-engine vehicles towards electrically powered cars could be further into the future.

Association of British Drivers spokesman Hugh Bladon explains: "What we're ignoring is the fact that electric cars are fine for around town, but someone has to create the electricity; it doesn't come out of thin air."

He adds that, if electric vehicles are to be used, there must be places where they can be charged.

Mr Bladon contends that the range of the vehicles is also limited, meaning that "you're stuffed" if you want to travel further than 40 miles.

Emissions are just one of the issues that can impact on the cost of car insurance, along with the size of a vehicle's engine and its fuel efficiency - all of which are items that could be reassessed in the coming years if electric cars enter the mainstream motoring market.

InsureandGo offers car insurance at competitive prices for vehicles already on the road.
