Consumers gearing up for a fun time this festive season have been reminded to ensure that they spare a thought for their furry friends by NFU Mutual.

The pet insurance provider notes that last December saw nearly a third of policyholders make a claim on either dog or cat insurance, emphasising the need to be ready for any eventuality this season.

NFU reminds owners that chocolate is poisonous to dogs and that alcohol can be seriously bad for an animal's health and as such consumers should keep an eye on stray plates and glasses.

Animal lovers who are keen to involve their animals in the festivities are also advised not to drape tinsel or bows on their pets as they could injure themselves by getting tangled or trying to eat it.

Similar advice on animal safety was recently issued by the California Veterinary Medical Association.

People shopping around for a great deal on pet insurance may find they can get one from InsureandGo.
