Ten locations on the continent were given the titles of European Destinations of Excellence (Eden) at the European Annual Tourism Forum in recent days.
Winners of the excellence awards include the Troodos Mountains in Cyprus, which is located near Mount Olympus, Nadur on Gozo, next to the island of Malta and Kuldiga in Latvia, which has been labelled as "the Latvian Venice".
European Commission vice-president Gunter Verheugen explained that the Eden project encourages tourism on the continent as well as raising awareness of a range of less established destinations.
"It is a platform for the exchange of good practices at European level while rewarding sustainable forms of tourism and successful business models," he said.
The European Commission launched the Eden project in 2006.
