Tourists from all over Europe are appreciating the Mediterranean charm of Malta as its tourist office announced that the number of holidaymakers flying home from the island increased 2.4 per cent on the corresponding 2006 figure.

Some 51,736 visitors departed from Maltese airports after enjoying a sun-kissed winter break or energising adventure holiday, reports di-ve news, with the main increase coming from Scandinavia and nearby Italy.

It appears that tourists are choosing to stay in collective accommodation rather than private villas or houses as nights spent in hotel accommodation jumped by 2.8 per cent.

Malta has always been a firm favourite among the cultured tourists for its streets are littered with some of the most stunning Renaissance cathedrals and Baroque palaces as it has been a strategic point of importance for European powers since the medieval times.

However, the island is more than just a sun-blessed museum. It is fast becoming the Mediterranean destination of choice for rock climbers as its limestone cliffs have undergone many years of erosion creating thousands of challenging routes.
