Europeans discontented with the shape of their bodies are turning to Tunisia for cheaper plastic surgery as medical tourism becomes a burgeoning industry in Africa.

The promise of high quality clinical care along with the sun-blessed environment of an small nation laden with architectural splendour has led to a flood of tourists visiting the country for more than just a quick tan.

Only last month, AFP reported that tourists seeking cut-price surgery added £19.2 million to the South African economy.

Ben Yedar, manager of the Soukra Clinic in Tunis, which carries out such surgeory, told Reuters: "There is a growing European fad for plastic surgery in Tunisia. It could become a hub for medical tourism. If we manage to get 5,000 to 10,000 people every year, this will be an extraordinary industry."

He added that treatments can be up to 60 per cent cheaper in the north African country than in Europe, and often patients will be seen much quicker in higher quality hospitals than those back home.

The benefits for the local economy are enormous. "A traditional tourist spends between €300 and €400 during his stay, but a medical tourist spends €2,500 to €4,000 at least," he added.

Africa's northernmost country boasts a remarkable history of human civilisation stretching back 3,000 years that has left behind ruins and cultural influences from the Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, Turks, Spanish and the French – the most famous being the ancient city of Carthage.

Tunisia also boasts a mild climate all year long with a whole host of stunning beaches with various water sports including surfing, sailing and scuba diving.
