Recent progression in the European aviation and rail travel industries will force the current Eurostar operators to offer more flexible and competitive fares, according to European Rail.

The company predicts that collaborations between air and rail companies like Air France, KLM and Veolia will give consumers faster and more competitive transport options, opening up the possibility of travel between London and Paris in under two hours.

Michael Birtles, managing director at the firm, claimed: "International rail liberalisation will provide a much wider choice of routes and fares in Europe than the currently established operators offer."

In order to compete with this, he called upon the Channel Tunnel operators to offer the same kind of competitive travel fares and routes in order to stay competitive.

According to Eurostar, more than 85 million people have used the service since it first opened in 1994, with an average of more than 300 trains passing along the route every day.

InsureandGo offers competitive travel insurance options for those planning a European break.
