The engineering feat that was the creation of the Channel Tunnel has been celebrated as one of the wonders of the modern world.

It is the only UK landmark on the list, which was led by recognisable tourist attractions such as the Sydney Opera House and the Eiffel Tower.

One hotel, the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, was also part of the list, coming in at third.

Two US landmarks were chosen, the Golden State Bridge in San Francisco and the Empire State Building of New York.

The list was arrived at by the polling of 2,700 people through the internet by Teletext Holidays.

A further list was created of the UK's own seven wonders, which included Big Ben, Wembley Stadium, the London Eye and the River Thames, London heavily dominating the field.

Cornwall's Eden Project biodome was a favourite, coming in second place.

The original seven wonders of the world were first mentioned by Antipater of Sidon, and featured buildings of antiquity such as the Great Library of Alexandria and the Gardens of Babylon.
