Many Britons do not use their garage for its traditional use, according to a new survey by a leading insurer.
In light of figures suggesting that nearly 60 per cent of households use their garage to store items that will not fit in their homes, rather than to park a car, Legal & General has produced a list of typical UK garage contents.
Possessions found in the average consumer's garage include bikes, DIY equipment and furniture from the garden or house that is currently not in use, the insurer explains.
Ruth Wilkins, head of communications for the firm's general insurance business, advises consumers to check that their
home insurance covers items in an outbuilding.
"Household insurance does not cover for theft or damage to cars or motorised vehicles stored in the garage and these should be insured separately," she states.
Garages are not the only area of the home not being used for their traditional purposes, as recent research by the insurer indicated that the role of the kitchen is also evolving, with 28 per cent of Britons having a television or stereo in the room.
