Many UK road users assume that their existing motor insurance will provide them with comprehensive protection while they drive in the EU.

However, insurance provider esure stated in recent days that it only extends to cover third party damages.

Adrian Webb, head of corporate communications at the firm, explained that under European law, comprehensive UK car insurance only gives drivers third-party cover while in the EU.

"If you crash your car into somebody else's, writing off their car and injuring them and writing off your car and injuring you, the only thing that's covered is their losses. Any damage to your own car is not covered," he added.

Mr Webb concluded that drivers should contact their insurer and ask for their cover to be extended for the duration of their European trip.

The RAC Foundation states that three million British motorists travel to the continent through the channel tunnel and ferry every year.
