The extreme weather conditions experienced in the US over recent days continued yesterday.

Ice storms that have swept the country are thought to have been responsible for around 50 deaths in the country since Friday.

Snow, high winds and floods have also been in evidence in a number of states, with Missouri and Oklahoma the worst hit.

President George W Bush has now announced federal emergencies in both states.

Electricity remained down at around 300,000 homes throughout the US by the end of Tuesday.

The storms have now passed over Maine on the US east coast, dumping ten inches of snow, leaving US residents to begin undertaking a large clean up operation.

With the worst of the weather now passed in the US, it is the eastern provinces of Canada that are now receiving the remnants of the snow storm.

A large number of cancellations have been forced upon both Toronto and Montreal's international airports.
