The Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued new warnings to holidaymakers travelling to Lebanon, following fighting between the Lebanese Army and militants.

Britons are advised to steer clear of Tripoli and the Palestinian refugee camps, following trouble between the army and militants and the Nahr al-Barid camp over the weekend.

The statement also advises against any non-essential travel to Lebanon due to last year's conflict between Hizbollah and Israel, as well as the "ongoing political instability within the country".

Visitors are also advised against all travel south of the Litani River, following the conflict last summer which saw more than 1,000 people killed and hundreds injured.

Opposing groups have continued to clash since the beginning of this year and tourists are strongly urged not to get involved in any public demonstrations.

"There is a high threat of terrorism in Lebanon against Western interests, this includes a threat that Westerners may be kidnapped," the warning says.

It added that those visiting Lebanon should "exercise extreme caution" and register with the British Embassy, as well as carry identity papers at all times.

Finally, it strongly recommends that tourists obtain comprehensive travel insurance before travelling to the area.
