Tourists travelling to their destination by ferry will experience a "different kind of holiday" than if they were to travel by other methods, the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has said.

A spokesperson for the organisation said that they are particularly well-suited to families, allowing for a greater degree of freedom and choice.

Ferry travel is set to increase in popularity during the Easter holidays, with a sharp rise seen in the number of passengers during April 2007.

Shipping Times reports that there were around 235,000 travellers passing through Dover ferry port during last year's Easter weekend.

Frances Tuke, spokesperson for Abta, also said that ferries are a good choice for those wanting to minimise the effect their holidays have on the environment.

"I think people are thinking very differently about how they travel and so green issues do come to the forefront," she commented.
