Those attending festivals during the summer periods need to check that any second drivers are named on their car or van insurance policy, it has been noted.

As the festival season draws near, the many thousands of revellers planning trips at home or abroad to see headline music acts should look to check the terms of their policy to make sure they are covered in the event of an accident, advises the RAC.

Erik Nelson, a spokesperson for the firm, has said that such checks are important because second driver cover differs between insurers.

"If a person wanted to drive a friend's car and were insured fully comprehensively on their own vehicle they would be third party only on their friend's car," he notes, adding that this would still mean that the policy-holder is left with 100 per cent of the bill should an accident occur.

The advice is particularly important for young drivers as those under the age of 21 were found to be five times more likely to have an accident than people over the age of 35.

InsureandGo offers car and van insurance policies for a range of coverage options.
