Very few general and life insurance customers complain about their policy, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

The organisation explains that complaints are made at a rate of around one for every 1,200 insurance policies in place in the UK.

Overall, director of consumer strategy at the ABI Maggie Craig says there are 82 million life insurance policies currently in circulation and 160 million general insurance policies.

"The ABI's member companies understand that consumers need meaningful information to help them make effective financial choices; how complaints are handled is part of this," she says.

Her comments follow figures from the Financial Services Authority that reveal the number of complaints faced by insurers and the length of time typically taken to resolve them.

More than nine-tenths of life insurance claims were resolved within eight weeks during the second half of 2008, according to the figures, with just eight per cent taking longer.
