Fiji's tourism industry is slowly recovering, according to a government official.

Narendra Redda, Fiji's Nadi chamber of commerce president, said that a buoyant recovery is not taking place because many of the locals have been laid off or are "working on reduced hours".

He said that figures reveal that the sector is "getting back on its feet".

However, he told Travel Mole: "There would be some percentage increase in the hotel section with the reduced rates or packages… That's a good sign for everyone in the industry."

Mr Redda added: "We welcome any such increase in the tourism industry with open arms."
