The tango may have originated in the backstreets of sun-soaked Buenos Aires in Argentina but such has been its popularity that the dance has spread so far north that people have begun dancing it on snow.

On March 3rd this year, the Snow Tango World Championship rolls into Tampere in Finland, which will see hundreds of couples move their feet to the finest tango rhythms while trying to negotiate the slippery surface.

But on close inspection there may be some rationale for the Finns' love of tango. The dance was heavily influenced by German immigrants in Buenos Aires and Finland has had historic close ties with its Germanic neighbours.

Locals often dress up in fancy winter-themed costumes for the competition, which contributes to a warm atmosphere in the city.

Although it has 200,000 inhabitants – large by Finnish standards – travellers often maintain that Tampere retains a small-town feel and in the city centre all the necessary amenities are within walking distance of each other.

There are also a number of large lakes nearby, which are popular for ice-fishing, winter swimming and snow shoeing.

In the summertime, visitors can go on boat cruises around the historic city and take to the waters themselves as there are many sailing, rowing and kayaking operators available.
