Members of the public are being advised to carry out a safety check to decrease the chances of a fire in their home.

Halifax Home Insurance has issued the recommendation in light of data indicating that last year the firm had almost 3,000 fire-related claims, which cost more than £23 million to put right.

Tips from the insurer include identifying an escape route and keeping it clear in case of emergencies, making sure that there is at least one smoke alarm on each floor of a property and that it is regularly checked and ensuring that all electrical wiring is safe.

Spokesperson Vicky Emmott commented: "With 200 house fires happening every day, there's definitely more that could be being done to protect people's homes and families from the risks."

In recent days, the insurance provider advised homeowners to ensure that they have sufficient insurance to cover potential damage from fireworks during the festive period.
