Homeowners who want to try and avoid a claim on their
home insurance could find that mains-wired fire alarms are an ideal investment.
According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, 12 per cent of fires in 2006 occurred in properties where failed smoke alarms were reported.
But a lot of these devices were powered by battery.
A Rospa spokesman pointed out the flaws with such a system.
He commented: "Batteries can also run out, go flat and people forget to replace them. With the mains-wired ones, obviously that is not a problem."
The spokesman also pointed out that most local fire stations are willing to fit smoke alarms for free, which could help people avoid claiming on their home insurance policy should an accident occur.
Fire alarms should always be fitted in the home for the safety of those who live in the property as well as protecting the property itself.
