A 13th-century castle in Ayrshire has been left damaged after a fire broke out in a top floor room and spread to the roof.

Home insurance which protects against fire is essential for any property owners, to avoid them having the costly task of replacing ruined items.

Kelburn Castle is the ancestral home of the Earl of Glasgow, who was asleep in the building when the fire broke out at 01:45 GMT.

Lord Glasgow lives in the castle with his son David and neither were injured in the blaze.

The castle is believed to be the oldest in Scotland still occupied by the family that first built it.

The fire was put out at around 07:20 GMT, after 25 firefighters attended the scene.

Home insurance from InsureandGo could be a wise investment for property owners to protect them against the financial cost of having to replace items lost in a fire.
