Homeowners could avoid potential injury and
home insurance claims if they follow a few basic tips on fire safety in the kitchen of their property.
The Sheffield Telegraph reports that the local fire brigade has issued a safety warning to residents after having to respond to six house fires started by cooking incidents.
According to the newspaper, officers from the fire service commented that the risk of injury from kitchen fires is high as flames in such incidents can swiftly spread.
Tips from the brigade include not attempting to cook when intoxicated and ensuring that ovens and toasters are kept clean.
Jon Parkes, fire station manager at Maltby, told the newspaper: "We urge everyone to be extra vigilant in the kitchen, never leave pans unattended and, if possible, to replace chip pans with deep fat fryers."
Safer Houses reports that it is important to have an evacuation plan in place should a fire start in the home.
