One of Spain's biggest festivals kicks off next month in violent fashion as around two million Valencian locals and tourists set the city ablaze with burning effigies and monumental parades.
Las Fallas is best known for its giant papier mache figurines, which are modelled on any number famous figures; from filmstars, to local celebrities.
Once these 15 to 30 foot behemoths have been paraded around the city, a series of fireworks are set off and the effigies are burnt to the sounds of drums and cheers.
Another violent face to the festival is seen in the city's Plaza del Toros, the bullfighting ring, of which the locals are fiercely proud. The controversial sport takes place every afternoon and evening in the arena during the festival.
Animal rights activists argue that the sport is barbaric but fans argue that before the slaughter the matador engages in a high art form, comparable to dance or ballet as he jostles, goads and dodges his way around the bull.
Las Fallas takes place in Valencia from March 10th to 19th.
