The increasing value of unprotected property in UK gardens could cost the nation some £780 million on Guy Fawkes' night, new research has revealed.

A new study by AA Home Insurance has indicated that as Brits increasingly take to al fresco living, they may risk a costly bill if bonfire night celebrations get out of hand.

Greenhouses, decking, lawn furniture and other outdoor property in UK gardens is estimated to total some £5.7 billion yet almost a quarter (23 per cent) of people state that none of their garden property is insured.

Janet Pell, head of AA Home Insurance, comments: "Every year Guy Fawkes celebrations wreak havoc in gardens across the country, so we need to make sure we've protected our outdoor property."

Defaqto recently advised consumers to ensure their homes are secure during fireworks celebrations as opportunistic thieves may take advantage or lapses in security to break into homes.
