British Airways' decision to ground some of its flight has been described by the World Wildlife Federation (WWF) as a win for the environment.
The aviation group said that the rising costs of fuel will mean that some of its flight schedules will be cut back.
Head of transport at the WWF Peter Lockley said that despite efforts by the industry to use fuel-efficient planes, reductions in emissions could only be limited to a small degree.
As fuel costs rise, some flight routes are becoming economically unviable for air operators, he suggested.
"They may have to ground some flights or perhaps offer fewer flights a day on a transatlantic route. From our perspective that's a win for the environment," he said.
Despite the inflated cost of fuel, BA recently announced end of year profits were up 45 per cent on the previous year.
