Residents in south-west England could be left claiming on their home insurance after the Environment Agency has issued weather warnings for the region.

On Monday alone 86 alerts were issued, comprising 48 flood watches and 38 flood warnings.

The risks are worsened as melting snow and forecasted heavy rainfall combine to raise the amount of water running off on to populated areas of the south-west.

Residents in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset could particularly wish to reassess their home insurance with those areas predicted to be most at risk.

High volumes of water in those areas at the beginning of the week resulted in the closure of some roads.

Environment Agency spokesperson Alan Rafelt says: "River levels are continuing to rise on the River Stour, Hampshire Avon and Wylye.

"But the next few days are predicted to be dry so that will give the saturated ground and rivers time to recover."

Met Office forecasts warn of potential flooding in the south turning to a risk of further snow in the Midlands as the cold air in the north meets the moisture in the south towards the end of the week.
