A couple whose home flooded during last year's floods have been told to pay £5,000 before they can make any other future claims on their insurance, according to a report.
Geoff and Jane Hawkes, from Fairford in Gloucestershire, have received a renewal from Abbey Insurance stating that their new insurance excess fee has gone up to £5,000 from £50, an increase of 100 times.
The couple have apparently been told they must prove they have taken adequate measures to prevent flooding in the future before the fee could be lowered, reports the Wiltshire and Gloucestershire Standard.
Their home was flooded by an inch and half of water last summer, meaning the couple had to live in a caravan outside their house for seven months.
The cost of the floods in summer 2007 is likely to top £3 billion according to the Times. UK insurers have seen 165,000 claims with the average cost around £20,000, the newspaper reports.
