The Environment Agency (EA) has issued flood warnings for dozens of parts of the UK as heavy rains and gale force winds threaten to cause severe damage to property and businesses across the country.

Winds of up to 80 mph have been predicted and over 45 flood warnings are now in place across England and Wales.

Most at risk from the rising water levels is the north-east, where 13 warnings were issued, but the south-west is also in for a torrid time as the Met Office predicts "squally south-westerly winds will increase to severe gale force for a time with gusts 60 to 75 mph".

The weather warning centre also warned motorists to be more cautious and allow more time for their journeys due to "a very strong and gusty westerly wind on all routes".

Scots living in Orkney and Shetland are also advised to make sure they have their home and car insurance up to date as winds will hit the area hard over the course of the day.

"Winds will become stronger this afternoon and evening with west to north-westerly severe gales developing, giving gusts of 70 to 80 mph," a Met Office spokesperson said.

However, winds across the country are expected to ease down tonight, except for the north-east, where stormy weather is expected to continue tomorrow.
