Severe weather recently caught UK motorists by surprise, as roads were blocked or passage completely hampered by torrential rains.

The Met Office has issued warnings of potential problems caused by heavy rain throughout England and Wales, as some places might receive in a day the amount of rain they get in a month.

Among the most tragic cases have been a man in Hull who had his foot caught in a drain and was drowned by the floods.

And the finding of a man's car abandoned near the overflowing River Tweed in the Borders has led some to speculate that the casualty tally could grow.

Severe delays in the railway system were to be expected, with the line north of Doncaster currently blocked, rail systems warned.

The weather has also forced the closure of some of the country's busiest roads, including the M1 between junctions 32 and 34 and southbound between junctions 36 and 34.
