Floods and sudden adverse conditions have caused a surge in claims by policyholders, as the public try to salvage what they can.

Homeowners have become as anxious they have found themselves battling against the surprise torrent of rain.

Given the large number of claims that get turned down every year due to underinsurance, insurance companies have advised the public to make sure they are properly covered.

The Association of British Insurers recommended in a statement that British policyholders contact their insurers as soon as possible, in case of any eventuality.

Most major insurers will have people on the ground ready to arrange help immediately, the ABI argued.

"Obviously, people's first priority is to ensure their families are safe and well. But we would certainly recommend informing your insurer at the earliest opportunity," commented spokesperson Jonathan French.

Keeping all receipts if money is spent to provide accommodation and other necessities in the intervening period was also recommended.
