Recent floods in the northern part of Britain have alerted homeowners to the need for home insurance, according to website firstrung.com.

Applications for home insurance from the affected regions of Hull, Sheffield, Doncaster and the West Midlands have surged by 300 per cent at popular price comparison site moneysupermarket.com after the floods.

"Clearly, homeowners who narrowly escaped the floods this time have realised that without any insurance cover they could be left footing bills for tens of thousands of pounds in the future," said Richard Mason, director of insurance for moneysupermarket.com.

The government has also pledged to build more flood defences but Mr Mason advised homeowners in flood areas to make sure they were covered as best as possible, since if these defences are not built insurers will be under no obligation to pay and costs could rise dramatically.

Currently, over 2.2 million properties are located in flood risk areas, with around a quarter deemed to be at significant risk, according to figures from the Environment Agency.

And one-third of the 200,000 homes planned to be built in the south-east region in the next ten years have been reported as being at risk of flooding.
