Football fans travelling long distances to follow their team at away matches may find themselves struggling with petrol costs, Virgin Money has warned.

According to the group, the average travelling fan will cover 2,031 miles over the course of the season in support of their team.

However, the company warned that they will have to pay an average of 26 per cent more for fuel this season as the recent price hikes come into effect.

Virgin Money's Scott Mowbray said: "People often focus on rising ticket prices but there are plenty of other factors that affect football fans - not least the distance they travel supporting their teams."

He said with such costs mounting, this could be the season where many fans find their finances stretched beyond their limits.

According to an earlier statement by the group, a quarter of all football fans in the UK plan to cut back on supporting expenditure this year.
