The Foreign Office has increased its warnings on travelling to Nigeria, advising against all travel to the Niger Delta.

The Niger Delta area includes Port Harcourt, Bayelsa and the Delta and Rivers states and according to the Foreign Office there is a "very high risk of kidnapping, armed robbery and armed attacks in these areas".

Since the beginning of last year, 130 foreign nationals and 30 British nationals have been kidnapped in the area and one Briton been killed, the Foreign Office reported in its Monday update.

It also advised against "any but essential travel" to the state of Akwa Ibom because of a similar high risk of kidnapping and armed robbery.

Kidnapping is also a potential risk in other south-eastern states, the Foreign Office giving the example of the March 17th kidnapping of two Chinese nationals that were taken hostage in Anambra State.

The Foreign Office warned it would only be able to give "limited consular assistance" in these areas, with assistance by the consulate last year having been mostly focused on scam artists.

There is also a risk of Avian Influenza and medical and travel insurance when travelling to Nigeria is highly recommended. InsureandGo offers great value travel cover. Call or go online for a quote.
